Phlox paniculata 'Laura' - new!
Add royal purple to your palette of garden Phlox with P. paniculata 'Laura.' This mildew-resistant variety produces huge clusters of blooms with white eyes. A fine selection from the Minsk Botanical Gardens.
Mature Height 30 - 36", full sun
P. paniculata is the species that earned Phlox its reputation as an indispensable garden plant, and it's worth your while to have as many as possible to enliven your garden in late summer. Glorious in the border, sublime for cutting, of easiest culture, and as sweet smelling as can be.
This important genus of valuable garden plants includes reliable and colorful species that bloom both early and late, in sun and shade, and in a range of rich colors that is equaled by few other genera. These glorious summer bloomers often have a spicy vanilla-clove perfume that is perfectly enchanting. We are, therefore, distressed to see Phlox falling out of favor for reasons that we suspect relate to problems with powdery mildew, which is much less common in modern varieties, or if plants are sited where there is good air movement and grown in soil that doesn't dry out. They can be backbone plants for any sunny border. Good companions include Shasta Daisies, Echinacea, Lilies, and ornamental Grasses.
