Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) is a native North American perennial known for its early spring blooms and the distinctive red-orange sap in its roots. As a spring ephemeral, it typically flowers in April before woodland trees leaf out, then goes dormant by midsummer.
Key Characteristics & Identification
- Flowers: Solitary, 1.5 to 3 inches wide, with 8–16 white petals and yellow centers. The flowers open in the sun and close at night or on cloudy days.
- Leaves: A single, deeply lobed, grayish-green leaf (5–9 lobes) initially wraps around the flower bud and later expands up to 9 inches across.
- Sap: All parts of the plant, especially the rhizomes (underground stems), contain a toxic, reddish juice used historically as a natural dye for baskets and clothing.
Bloodroot is ideal for woodland, native plant or rock gardens where plants can be left alone and allowed to naturalize.
