Maianthemum stellatum, widely known as Starry False Solomon's Seal or Starry Solomon's Plume, is a hardy, rhizomatous perennial native to a vast range across North America. It is valued in woodland gardens for its delicate, star-shaped white flowers and its ability to form an attractive, spreading groundcover. This plant is exceptionally adaptable and "tough," making it suitable for various landscape roles.
- Appearance: Typically grows 1 to 2 feet tall with unbranched, often arching or zig-zagging stems.
- Foliage: Features alternate, lance-shaped green to blue-green leaves that clasp the stem. The leaves often have a distinctive parallel veining pattern.
- Flowers: Clusters of 6–15 small, white star-shaped flowers appear at the tips of the stems from May to June.
- Light: Prefers partial to full shade but can tolerate full sun if the soil remains sufficiently moist.
