Hosta plantaginea, commonly known as the August Lily or Fragrant Plantain Lily, is a unique perennial prized for its large, waxy white flowers and intense, honeysuckle-like fragrance. Unlike most hostas that bloom in early summer with scentless purple flowers, this species blooms in August and its flowers typically open in the late afternoon or evening.
- Fragrance: It is the only naturally occurring hosta species with a strong scent, and it has passed this trait to all other fragrant hosta hybrids.
- Foliage: Features bright, glossy, light green, heart-shaped leaves that can form a dense mound up to 3–4 feet wide.
- Flowers: Produces trumpet-shaped white blooms that can reach up to 6 inches in length—enormous by hosta standards.
- Light: While it can handle more sun than other varieties, it performs best in partial to full shade. Filtered sun can actually improve blooming vigor.
